The design process
Every design project is different (e.g. new design projects are different from restorations, greenroof designs are different from bioswales). Yet, a similar design process is usually followed. Time to completion depends on meeting schedules and availability, but most projects can be completed in 30 to 60 days. The following is an outline and brief description of how most projects evolve.
- Initial client/designer screening (free) - This occurs when you call to inquire about the services we offer. We will simply chat on the phone, ask each other questions and make sure we have the same goals in mind.
- Initial meeting (free, but one-time deductable travel fee applies; see "Services we offer" for details) - We will meet you at the site and discuss the nature of the project, your goals and the services/documents you wish to receive. From our notes, we will calculate a price for the design work and send the bid to you in the form of a contract (payment plan = 30% at contract signing, 40% at the preliminary design meeting and 30% at the final presentation).
- Client survey - Once you have signed the contract, we will have you fill out our client survey so that we can learn more about your preferences, goals and lifestyle.
- Site inventory and analysis - At this meeting, we will first sit down and review the client survey with you. Next, we will perform a thorough inventory and analysis of the site. This site inventory and analysis will differ from traditional landscape designers in that we focus on site elements (plants, hardscapes, etc.) that may be reused or recycled for the proposed design. If appropriate, our inventory and analysis also evaluates the current landscape with regards to inputs (water, fertilizer, pesticides, etc.). Next, we will measure the site, record observations and take photographs.
- Base map development to preliminary design - During this stage, we integrate information from the client survey, site inventory and analysis, our notes, our measurements and photographs into a base map upon which we will render the preliminary design using computer aided design (CAD*) software. It is during this phase that we also check all federal, state and local codes that may apply to the proposed design.
- Preliminary design meeting - At this meeting, we will present the preliminary design to you. Together, we will review the design carefully. The most important outcome of this meeting is that we document and fully understand any and all changes that you would like to see in the proposed design.
- Rendering the master plan - During this phase, we will integrate any changes discussed at the preliminary design meeting into the final master plan. We will draw the master plan with CAD software and render it in color.
- Presentation of the final plan - At this final meeting, we will present the master plan to you and answer any questions you may have about the design. You will receive all of the documents contracted in the full design package.
* We use CAD for the base map, preliminary design and final master plan so that we can i) fully utilize the many resources available from regional, state and local municipalities (e.g. soils maps, topography maps, ecoregions, utilities) and ii) update the plan as the design develops and make changes in a timely manner.
