FAQs
What makes Sandrock different from other landscape firms?
At Sandrock, sustainable landscapes are all we do. We hold environmental responsibility as our core principle. If the project is not in line with our philosophy, we will not do it.
Is a sustainable landscape still going to look nice?
Yes. Our outdoor built environment has ecological, functional and aesthetic beauty and the three are intimately linked. We seek environmentally sound solutions to site challenges first and then work to make them beautiful. At Sandrock, a sustainable landscape does not occur at the expense of aesthetics but parallel with it.
Why should I hire Sandrock to help me with my landscape?
David and Jessica have 30 years of combined experience in Horticulture and related fields. Our background and continuing education provide us a unique understanding of horticulture, soil science, ecology, biology, design and contemporary environmental issues. We have an extensive network of local suppliers and landscape professionals. In addition, we are up to date on current issues related to green design [e.g. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, Low Impact Development (LID), local codes].
Does a sustainable landscape cost less than a traditional landscape?
The cost for the design and construction of a sustainable landscape is about the same as a more traditional landscape. Maintenance is where the savings are. There are several documented cases that demonstrate a marked reduction in maintenance costs between a traditional landscape and a low input sustainable landscape.
Do you only recommend native plants?
We love the Pacific Northwest’s rich diversity of native plants, and because of their many environmental benefits, we highly recommend their use. Unfortunately, contemporary development often leaves us with planting environments that are far from the habitat of our region’s native plants. In this situation we i) select low input plants to match the planting environment (native or non-native) or ii) recommend rebuilding the planting environment to mimic an appropriate Pacific Northwest habitat that will support our natives.
Do you do designs for “do-it-yourselfers”?
Yes. Many residential customers are seeking a plan that they can implement over time. We are happy to work with these folks in their pursuit of a more sustainable landscape.
